Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Electoral malpractices, including vote-buying, rigging, and intimidation, continue to undermine the integrity of elections in Nigeria. Kano Municipal LGA, located in Kano State, has witnessed a range of electoral malpractices, often linked to the tactics of political parties seeking to secure political power. Political parties in the region are influential players in the electoral process, and their involvement in electoral fraud has been a longstanding concern (Suleiman & Ibrahim, 2024). These practices affect the fairness of the electoral process, distort voter preferences, and damage the credibility of elected officials.
This study seeks to examine the role of political parties in electoral malpractices within Kano Municipal LGA, investigating how these parties engage in activities that undermine the democratic process. The focus will be on understanding the mechanisms behind electoral fraud, the factors that enable it, and the consequences for local governance and democratic consolidation.
